Do you know about WIC?

February 21, 2017

WIC not only offers vouchers for nutritious foods but also provides nutrition education to pregnant mothers, breastfeeding mothers, infants and children under the age of five. WIC gives participants nutrition information to help them know what healthy foods to buy as well as tips for feeding their babies and children.

Most people donโ€™t have readily available access to reliable nutrition information, so this is one of the many benefits of being a part of the WIC program. WIC also works hard to connect families with other resources in the community that they may not know about. There are numerous other benefits too, like breastfeeding support from the breastfeeding peer counselors at WIC.

Butโ€ฆ do you qualify?

Many people may not realize they qualify for WIC, when they actually do! A family of four qualifies for WIC vouchers with a total annual income of $44,955 or less ($3,747 per month), and a single mom with one child qualifies with a total annual income of $29,637 or less ($2,470 per month). You automatically qualify if you already receive Medicaid, Food Stamps, or are part of the Work First program.

Still not sure? Fortunately, it is easy to apply for WIC. You can call 828-250-5000 to set up an appointment. Buncombe County WIC has worked hard to try to keep appointment times under an hour and not make it a burden to come in and get vouchers.
