A Note From Your Publisher

How do Moms do this?

By Sandra Bilbray February 12, 2019

Just when I took over as the new publisher of Asheville Macaroni Kid, my daughter got the flu. (Drats, the flu vaccine didn't cover the strain she picked up.)  24 hours later? I got diagnosed with bronchitis. I remember the first time I got sick as a Mom of twins. Suddenly I was like, "How do Moms do this?" How can you care for others while you're sick? The mom train keeps on moving. You know, the train of all things kids, work, meals, exercise, deadlines and more. (Pre-kids you could crash in bed and watch a Hallmark movie marathon until you felt better. With kids? That's a no go.)  Even when we have to plod through our sickness, it still forces us to slow down a bit. So, what did I think about in the middle of chicken soup, coughing and thousands of tissues?

1. We need to value our health and savor the times in our lives when all is going well. It's easy to take the everyone is well, life is going great right now for granted. Let's take a moment to appreciate and feel gratitude when everyone is healthy!

2. Moms (and Dads!) need more sleep. While I might like to convince myself I only need six hours, I need eight. Sleep researchers have discovered that most people do. Are you investing those eight precious hours into your health and well-being? I truly believe adequate sleep has more power than we might realize. Sleep is restorative and protects our health!

3. Give yourself some self-love. How often do you give yourself self-care? A night with a good book? Your favorite socks and a mug of warm tea? A yoga class or downloading the Calm App? Maybe some uninterrupted indulgence TV or a date night? Give yourself a healthy dose of all that great love you bestow on your little ones. The caretaker needs care too. If we ignore ourselves for the sake of our wee ones, we can't be our best selves.

How is your 2019 going so far? I'd love to hear from you.
