I always enjoy experiencing each holiday through the lens of my children. They're so excited whenever I bring down the seasonal bin from the attic and we explore new games, puzzles, books, etc related to that holiday. I picked out some of our favorites and listed them below.
We're fortunate enough to own each of these books as years of teaching helped me accumulate an impressive children's book collection; however, I encourage you to shop the after holiday sales or visit your local library to check some of these out! Utilizing the Buncombe County Library catalog, you can easily place a book on hold or access their audio versions which include fun sound effects. You can also find each of these books read aloud on Youtube.
1. Room on the Broom
Written by: Julia Donaldson
Illustrated by: Axel Scheffler
A friendly witch is flying on her broomstick when the wind causes her to lose her hat, her bow, and even her wand. Thankfully helpful animals save the day and she is kind enough to offer them a ride on her broom, but will they all be able to fit? It is written in a fun rhyming fashion that makes for an enjoyable read and has even been turned into a short animated film. This author has written several great books so I encourage you to check out her other fun stories, such as The Gruffalo!
2. The Hallo-wiener
Written and illustrated by: Dav Pilkey
From the same author who wrote the Captain Underpants series comes this cute story about a lovable dachshund who is teased about his size. Yet, his bravery on Halloween night saves the day and this book could easily jumpstart a great discussion with your children about the Golden Rule.
3. There's a Monster in Your Book
Written by: Tom Fletcher
Illustrated by: Greg Abbott
This interactive book is sure to be a hit with your little ones and always gets mine giggling as they shake, tilt, and spin their book around and around to try to get that stubborn monster out of their book. Oh no, now he's in their room!! Quick, let's try to get him safely back in the book again.
4. The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Written by: Joe Troiano
Illustrated by: Susan Banta
This book naturally lends itself to a discussion about embracing differences as Spookley isn't like the other (round) pumpkins. Just like Room on the Broom, this Halloween book has also been turned into an animated film.
5. Too Many Pumpkins
Written by: Linda White
Illustrated by: Megan Lloyd
This heartwarming story is about a woman who absolutely despises pumpkins, yet as luck would have it, she winds up with a yard filled with them. She decides to share with others who do like them and learns how good it feels to be kind to others.
