A Slam Dunk Night with the Harlem Globetrotters

By Kaitlin O'Steen, Publisher Macaroni KID Asheville April 14, 2023

Last night, my husband, daughter, and I enjoyed a highly entertaining performance put on by the beloved Harlem Globetrotters. Combining athletic talent, impressive tricks, dancing, upbeat music, and audience participation made for an excellent family friendly show.

From spinning balls on their feet to backflips across the court, this show was action packed from start to finish. The audience participation truly kept everyone engaged as you never knew who was going to be selected from the audience next.

The Circle of Life from The Lion King started playing and next thing you know showman Hammer Harrison is in the bleachers holding up a baby. Later, he grabbed a gentleman's sneaker from the audience and used it to ward off the opponents during a game where they dramatically pretended the stinky smell was too overpowering and fell to the ground. After an impressive basket is made, Cinderella music starts playing and he returns to put this "glass slipper" back on the gentleman's foot and dances with him across the court.

Kids were picked out of the audience to spin balls on their finger, attempt free throws, and dance with the players. They created memories those kids would carry with them for the rest of their life.

Their mascot performed a short little routine of antics that had my daughter giggling hard especially when his googley eyes popped off his face.

At one point during the game, guard Wham Middleton impressed the audience by standing on top of the basketball hoop!

In my opinion, one of the coolest parts was when the players hilariously acted out a replay from the game in reverse (with the perfect VHS rewinding background noise) and then again in slow motion. It's one of those things you would just have to be there to experience. They had us, the audience, even re-do our wave in slow motion. A lady who was walking back to her seat from the bathroom was called out as they made her walk back to her seat in "slow mo."

Multiple impressive slam dunks were made as the Harlem Globetrotters defeated the Washington Generals. Afterwards the players spread out across the court for autographs.

If you missed this fun family friendly show, they head to Greenville, SC on April 22, 2023 and Charlotte, NC on April 23, 2023 if you're up for a road trip. You can see their full schedule by clicking here
