Originally written in 1924 by Gertrude Chandler Warner and adapted for the stage in 1999 by Barbara Field, The Boxcar Children is an entertaining and educational play, which tells the story of four orphaned children during the Great Depression. Fearing separation and with their motto, "we stick together like glue," as their guide, the four Alden siblings take matters into their own hands and create a home for themselves in an abandoned boxcar in the forest. As time passes, they discover the struggles and rewards of independence as well as the joys of family.
Being appropriate for both boys and girls, The Boxcar Children books have provided for many young students their first enjoyable reading experience. The wilderness, the boxcar, the confrontations, the simple yet clever comforts they create for themselves, and the uncertainty of their future are among those things that make this story enthralling and memorable. The characters treat each other kindly and there are wonderful life lessons to be learned. The Boxcar Children also explores the themes of personal integrity, maturity, and making do with what you have. In tough times, people begin to appreciate the things in life that cannot be bought, like the generosity and kindness of friends, family and strangers.
St Gerard House and Immaculata Catholic School present The Boxcar Children, a lovely show for the entire family, onstage March 9-18. (Friday at 7pm; Saturday at 2 and 7pm; Sunday at 2pm).
